The Good Samaritan (Rafn)
by Godfrey J. Ellis – 12×16 acrylic 2020
I grounded the car on a cement curb one early and still-dark Sunday morning. After Church, Mark Rafn came out to take a look. He was a 42-year-old young man who was suffering with terminal cancer. He immediately insisted on getting down on the ground and cut off the damaged section of the undercarriage with tin snips and a hacksaw. The plastic covering was not essential, and the repair was soon completed at no cost to us. While Mark was working on the repair, Godfrey surreptitiously took his photo so that he could paint his portrait as a surprise thank you gift. The white “mat” was painted as a part of the portrait.
