Reflecting (Redle)
by Godfrey J. Ellis – 8×10 Acrylic Oct 2019
The painting captures our friend, 80-year old Jim Redle, reflecting on a discussion that was going on. I took the photo without him even realizing I had taken of him. We gave the painting to his wife, Joan, on her birthday. It wasn’t my best work, but she said it was “beautiful.” I replied, “I’m not sure if that is the right descriptive adjective, but everyone seems to agree that it looked a lot like him.” As I later told my wife, “Some of my paintings are pretty good but with little resemblance, and some are not that great but have a good resemblance. Now, if I can just put those two together, I’ll be on my way.” Happily, we later learned that Joan showed it to her daughter and to her son and both raved about it. One claimed the painting for his, “when Joan passed on” (we laughed about that one) So, the simple and small painting was going to be well appreciated.
Below is the snapshot that I secretly took and used as a reference photo.
The photo below shows Jim holding his small painting.
I only have one photo of the painting in an early stage. Here it is (below):
