The Wandering Dogwood
by Godfrey J. Ellis – 1992
This painting was a wedding gift for my sister, Wendy and her new husband, David Black. It was a total experiment. The “mat” is part of the painting, not a real mat. That allowed the painting of several leaves to extend beyond the painting into the mat area. It was also the closest to abstract that I had painted to date. I had not painted for a couple of years but got out the paint and brushes to create a gift for his sister. I selected the dogwood because it was Wendy’s favorite flowering tree. She had it up in her condo in Surrey, Canada, but the colors do not match the color scheme of her new living room and the painting is now buried in her closet.
