Dappled Sunshine (Clonts)

by Godfrey J. Ellis – 14×18 Acrylic Sept 2020

This is another in my series of gift portraits for the sister missionaries. Lacey was the first area for Sister Clonts and I photographed her after she had been out for only a few days. My goal in this painting was to try to capture the light effect as the sun shone through the leaves of the tree under which she was sitting.

Below is the reference photo showing the dappled lighting. As you can see, the photo was on the dark side and I tried to add more color to the portrait than was in the photo.

Below is a photo of her taking away the portrait. Some of them become attached and it is hard to see them taken away, knowing they will never be seen again. And the paintings are, oh so very much better than the photo of them. Trust me on that!

Below are four photos of the painting as it progressed along its path toward becoming a portrait that I was happy to give away and she was happy to receive.
