Supervision and Conformity: A Cross-cultural Analysis of Parental Socialization Values

The American Journal of Sociology is the most prestigious journal in the field of Sociology. This article was based on my doctoral dissertation at Washington State University. My advisor (second author) encouraged me to submit the following article, which was based on the dissertation. The third author was another grad assistant and friend. My advisor never expected the article to be accepted for publication. When it was, he was furious that I was the first-listed author (a large bragging point), even though I was, in fact, the main author. He later “punished” me (shockingly, by his own later admission) by requiring me to complete an unprecedented 8 drafts of my dissertation.
