The Frock (Adams)
by Godfrey J. Ellis – 16×20 Acrylic Sep 2021
One of the male missionaries was transferred out of our area and, for some reason, he was not only replaced but the powers that be added a trio of sister missionarie, too. That means, four new missionaries to paint at once! The reason the sisters were in a trio is because one was going home in a week. I started with her, but that made this one was a little pressured.
The obvious challenge with this portrait was the picky details of her dress. She said I didn’t have to paint that and could just make it a plain color. Well… first, I don’t really know how I would do that and second, I like a challenge. The little flowers are slightly too big, but otherwise, I think it looks like her frock. Below is a photo of her with her portrait
Here are photos of the painting in its various stages. The first one was with the X’s was an experiment to see if that helped to get her facial proportions just right. I figured that you don’t sew a dress without a pattern or build a house without a blueprint. So, a little help on a painting couldn’t hurt.
